There are upbeat tracks mixed with powerful ballads, hard-hitting drums, classic Goapele vocals and even a duet with one of R&B’s top artists. Goapele’s (pronounced gwa-puh-lay) latest and fourth album, “Strong As Glass” was released late last year via BMG Primary Wave / Skyblaze Recordings and it features her single “Hey Boy” which was produced by Keith Harris, known for hits like “Meet Me Halfway” ( Black Eyed Peas) and “American Boy” (Estelle). She also worked with R&B veteran Eric Benet and producer Demonte Posey to finish this genre-bending record. This Oakland native and former Berklee College of Music student has continued to grow as artist and live performer in the eleven years since her debut. As an eloquent singer-songwriter, she completed her first release “Closer” in 2001 and never looked back. She also toured North America with band Spearhead.Īpart from her solo work, she has collaborated with rappers Aceyalone, E-40, Hieroglyphics, and Triple Threat, and written for jazz trio Soulive. She co-wrote and co-produced the entire album, which is a mixture of neo soul and jazz. In 2001, she signed with Skyblaze Recordings/Columbia Records, and in 2002, she released her first album Even Closer, featuring the single "Closer". After graduating from high school, Goapele attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where she studied music theory. She also sang in the Oakland Youth Choir and joined a group called Vocal Motion. During these years, she joined several groups that fought racism and sexism.

Goapele attended the Berkeley Arts Magnet School in Berkeley, California. She was born to a Jewish mother, Noa, and an African father, Douglas Mohlabane, who was a South African political exile. Her name means "to go forward" in the South African language Sesotho.
